In the immediate area of the house, lanes and tracks invite exploration
in every direction. A short walk along a private road takes you into the village. Macchie, which has a population of maybe
400, boasts a range of small shops, two bars, a bakery, a post office and so on, catering admirably to everyday needs. Excellent
wine, fruit and vegetable are also to be had at friendly farms nearby.
The nearest public open-air swimming pool is
three miles south at Tavernelle, or one can swim in the lake. Bicycles can be hired in Castiglione del Lago at no great cost.
The nearby Lamborghini estate offers golf and horse riding.
The villages set around Lake Trasimeno and tucked into
the surrounding hills are full of interest and well worth seeing. The lake itself is beautiful; there is a ferry, and there
are interesting islands to visit.
Inexpensive trattorias and good restaurants abound in the area, and the food generally
is just excellent. The main town on the lake, Castiglione del Lago, offers a colourful weekly market, lakeside bars and a
couple of well-stocked supermarkets.
Further afield but an hour or so away are Citta della Pieve, Chiusi, Deruta, Siena,
Spoleto, Todi and Orvieto. Florence and Rome are also reachable in an hour and a half by road, and an hour by train.
